Frequently Asked Questions
Introductory Essential Oil and Aromatherapy Information
What is aromatherapy
The definition that I like to use in conversation with those new to working with essential oils is below. I like this definition because it is simple, concise, and it opens the door for conversation and elaboration:
“Aromatherapy entails the use of essential oils and other natural aromatics for physical, psychological and spiritual well-being.”
Who coined the term aromatherapy?
The French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé coined the term aromatherapy in 1928. Although the term aromatherapy was not used until the 20th Century, the use of aromatic botanicals and aromatic oils date back thousands of years. Distillation and the use of essential oils dates back nearly one thousand years.
What are the benefits of using essential oils
Mental and Emotional Well-being
- Stress and Anxiety Relief: Oils such as Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) and Chamaemelum nobile (Roman Chamomile) are known for their calming effects. Lavender, in particular, may influence brain pathways like the limbic system to reduce anxiety and lower cortisol levels.
- Mood Enhancement: Citrus oils like Citrus limon (Lemon) and Citrus sinensis (Sweet Orange) are often used to uplift mood and promote positive feelings.
- Focus and Concentration: Salvia rosmarinus (Rosemary) and Mentha piperita (Peppermint) are frequently used to enhance mental alertness, memory, and productivity.
Is there a recommended way to evaluate the aroma of an essential oil?
Aromatic Ingredients
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile plant extracts that capture the natural scent and flavor ("essence") of botanical sources like flowers, leaves, bark, and roots. Obtained primarily via distillation or cold pressing, they are used in aromatherapy, skincare, and natural cleaning for their therapeutic properties, although they should be used with caution due to their potency.
What are absolutes?
Absolutes share a lot of similarities with essential oils. They are very fragrant, highly aromatic, and they can be exquisite to work with. However, they are produced in a much different manner, and there are some key differences to keep in mind when working with absolutes vs. essential oils.
What are CO₂
CO₂ Supercritical Extracts are also referred to as CO₂ Extracts and sometimes simply as CO₂s. CO₂ Extracts are produced by using a method known as supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. CO₂ Extracts are superior to essential oils in a number of ways.
What are hydrosols?
Hydrosols, also known as hydrolats, floral waters, or distillate waters, are aromatic, water-based products created by steam-distilling plant materials like flowers, leaves, and bark. They are gentle, therapeutic, and often used as skin toners, facial mists, or in aromatherapy for their calming and soothing properties.
What are carrier oils?
A carrier oil is
a natural, plant-based, fatty oil—such as jojoba, coconut, or almond oil—used to dilute highly concentrated essential oils for safe skin application. They "carry" the essential oil into the skin, preventing irritation and aiding absorption. Unlike volatile essential oils, they do not evaporate.
What fatty acids are present in carrier oils?
Carrier oils are primarily composed of triglycerides containing a mix of fatty acids, mainly
oleic (Omega-9), linoleic (Omega-6), and linolenic (Omega-3) acids, which determine their texture, absorption rate, and skin benefits. Key saturated fats like palmitic and stearic acids are also present.
Is it beneficial to use organic essential oils?
Generally speaking, certified organic essential oils are usually superior to conventional essential oils. (Conventional means non-organic.)
Why can it be confusing to refer to essential oils as "scents" or "fragrances"?
. While both are aromatic, essential oils are 100% plant-derived, whereas "fragrances" are typically lab-created, synthetic chemical compounds.
What are fragrance oils and how do they differ from essential oils?
Essential oils are not the same as fragrance oils, perfume oils or potpourri oils. Pure essential oils consist of aromatic molecules that have been distilled from natural plant material. Perfume and fragrance oils contain artificial substances. Although fragrance oils can smell great, they do not offer the caliber of therapeutic benefits that essential oils can offer.
What are infused oils? Are they the same thing as macerated oils?
What are resins?
When some plants, namely trees, are injured, they produce a thick, sticky substance called a resin. Frankincense, Myrrh and Benzoin are examples of resins that are used in the production of essential oils,
Does it matter if the aromatic i'm using is an essential oil, an absolute, a CO₂ extract, a hydrosol or something else?
It sure does! The therapeutic benefits, aroma, best methods of use, safety and cost can vary depending on whether you working with an essential oil, an absolute, a CO2 extract, a hydrosol, a macerated oil or a tincture of a particular botanical. This is one of the reasons why it's so very important to be careful in how you refer to the materials that you work with. It can be very problematic, for example, to refer to a fragrance oil as an essential oil.
Essential Oil Safety
Are there any safety precautions that i need to take when using essential oils?
Essential oils require caution due to their high concentration. Key precautions include:
never using them undiluted on the skin, performing a patch test first, keeping them away from eyes and mucous membranes, not ingesting them, and storing them away from children and pets. Avoid using citrus oils before sun exposure and use caution if pregnant, asthmatic, or using them around children.
Do i need to dilute essential oils when using them topically? if so, why?
Yes, you should almost always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (like jojoba, coconut, or olive oil) before applying them topically. Dilution is essential to prevent skin irritation, burning, rashes, and long-term sensitization, as well as to avoid systemic toxicity. A 2% dilution (about 2 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil) is generally safe for adults.
What essential oils are more likely to cause skin irritation?
Essential oils most likely to cause skin irritation include cinnamon bark, clove, lemongrass, tea tree, oregano, and citrus oils (lemon, orange, bergamot). Other high-risk oils include ylang-ylang, jasmine, and peppermint. These, especially when used undiluted, can cause redness, burning, or allergic reactions.
Are there any safety considerations i should keep in mind when diffusing essential oils?
Yes,there are several important safety considerations to keep in mind when diffusing essential oils to ensure a safe and pleasant environment. While generally safe, essential oils are highly concentrated compounds that can cause respiratory irritation or other adverse reactions if misused.
What essential oils are hazardous and should be completely avoided?
What essential Oils are Often Recommended to Avoid Entirely
- Pennyroyal: Contains high levels of pulegone, which is toxic to the liver and nervous system.
- Bitter Almond (Unrectified): Naturally contains prussic acid (cyanide) and is extremely dangerous.
- Wormwood and Mugwort: Contain thujone, a neurotoxin that can cause neurological distress.
- Wintergreen and Sweet Birch: Consist almost entirely of methyl salicylate; even small amounts can be dangerous if absorbed or ingested, especially for children.
- Savin: Highly toxic and not suitable for therapeutic use.
- Boldo Leaf and Rue: Known for high toxicity and potential for severe adverse reactions.
Why do some essential oils cost more than others?
Essential oil prices vary significantly due to the high volume of raw plant material required, labor-intensive harvesting, and low oil yields. Rare or fragile plants, specialized distillation methods (like CO₂ extraction), and logistical costs from specific regions further drive up prices for oils like Rose, Jasmine, and Sandalwood.
What are the best essential oils?
The best essential oils are typically those that offer high versatility for common needs like relaxation, focus, and physical relief. Lavender is widely considered the best overall "do-it-all" oil due to its proven ability to reduce stress and improve sleep.
Caring for Your Essential Oils and Hydrosols
Do essential oils have a shelf life?
Yes, essential oils have a shelf life, typically ranging from 1 to 5+ years depending on the oil type and storage. While they don't spoil like food, they oxidize, lose therapeutic potency, and may cause skin irritation. Generally, citrus oils last 1–2 years, while wood/resin oils can last 4–8+ years.
How should i store my essential oils?
Store essential oils in dark glass bottles (amber or cobalt) in a cool, dark, and dry place—such as a drawer or cabinet—upright and away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and humidity. Keep caps tightly sealed to prevent oxidation and evaporation. Refrigeration is recommended for maximum shelf life, particularly for citrus oils.
How should i dispose of old essential oils?
Old essential oils should never be poured down the drain, as they can harm aquatic life and clog pipes. Instead, safely dispose of them by absorbing small amounts with paper towels, sand, or cat litter, then throwing them in the household trash. For larger quantities, contact your local hazardous waste facility.
Can i clean and reuse essential oil bottles?
Yes, you can clean and reuse glass essential oil bottles by removing labels, soaking components in high-proof alcohol (like vodka) or hot, soapy water to dissolve residue, and drying completely. Bottles should be thoroughly sanitized, especially if used for different oils, but avoid reusing them for therapeutic or skin-application purposes.
Essential Oils for Spirituality and Enlightenment
Can essential oils be used during prayer or when i meditate?
Essential oils are highly recommended for enhancing prayer and meditation by creating a calming, focused, and sacred environment. They help ground the mind, reduce stress, and promote deeper spiritual connection. Popular choices include Frankincense, Sandalwood, Lavender, Palo Santo, and Vetiver.
Can essential oils help cleanse a space of negativity?
Yes, essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy and spiritual practices to help clear stagnant, negative, or heavy energy from a space, promoting a more positive and peaceful atmosphere. They work by shifting the energetic vibration of a room through scent, enhancing relaxation, and fostering intentional, positive focus.
What is smudging? What is a smudge stick?
Smudging is a sacred Indigenous, ceremonial, or ritualistic practice of burning dried herbs—most commonly sage—to cleanse a person, place, or object of negative energy, promote emotional balance, and encourage spiritual purification. A smudge stick is a tightly bound bundle of dried herbs (like white sage, lavender, or cedar) designed to smolder and produce smoke for this purpose.
Essential Oils and the Chakras
Can i use essential oils to help balance my chakras?
es, many people use essential oils as a complementary practice to help balance their chakras within a holistic healing framework. The practice is based on anecdotal evidence and traditional beliefs rather than scientific proof, though some studies show that aromatherapy may have benefits for general mood and well-being.
Do you have any tips for creating chakra blends?
Creating chakra blends involves matching essential oils with the energetic properties and locations of the seven main chakras, often aiming for a balance of grounding base notes and uplifting top notes. Key tips include using high-quality oils, using a carrier oil for dilution, and setting a clear intention during the blending process.
