Clary Sage Essential Oil is extracted by steam distillation from the flowering tops and the leaves of Salvia sclarea. It is native to southern Europe and is cultivated for its oil in France and Russia. The greatest benefit of this oil is its calming influence on the nerves and is particularly useful for female complaints and ailments. It is also said to help skin troubles like acne, boils and ulcers and relieves painful muscles and joints.

Clary sage is helpful to those suffering from depression, stress, and insomnia. It has been used to help in women's problems like painful periods, irregular menstruation and during labour. During menopause, this oil is believed to reduce hot flushes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability, as well as headaches and dizziness. It has been used as an aphrodisiac. It is also good for digestion and the kidneys. Clary sage oil should be avoided when consuming alcohol, as it may increase intoxication. Use in small quantities as a large dose can give you a headache.

In the middle ages, clary sage was known as Oculus Christi, which meant 'the eye of Christ.' It was a highly esteemed medicine right since then. In Jamaica, it was used by the local people for cleaning and cooling ulcers and for inflammation of the eyes. It is an expensive oil and has been an important and useful one in aromatherapy and   natural medicine for a long time.

How to Use

10 Ways to Use Essential Oils

1. Aromatherapy Diffuser

Add 2–8 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser to disperse scent and improve mood.

2. Surface Cleaner

Mix lemon tea tree oil with water and vinegar in a spray bottle for a natural disinfectant.

Dilute with jojoba carrier oil for direct skin application to treat spots or use as perfume.

4. Dryer Balls/Laundry

Put 2–3 drops on wool dryer balls to scent clothes naturally, or add to homemade laundry powder.

6. Steamy Shower/Bath

Add a few drops to shower walls or in bath salts to create a spa-like, relaxing atmosphere.

5. Room/Yoga Mat Spray

Mix water, a small amount of rubbing alcohol (as an emulsifier), and oils in a spray bottle.

7. Passive Diffusion

Apply drops to cotton balls and place in gym bags, trash cans, or cupboards to eliminate odors.

8. In Your Bath

Dilute 5–20 drops of essential oil in 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil (like jojoba, coconut, or almond) to prevent skin irritation. Add this mixture to your bathwater after the tub is filled, and stir well just before entering to maximize benefits.

9. In your Shower

To use essential oils in the shower for a spa-like experience, add 5–15 drops to a damp washcloth, a shower steamer, or directly onto the shower floor away from the drain, allowing the heat to create aromatic steam. Popular, safe options include lavender for relaxation, eucalyptus for congestion, or bergamot oils for energy.

10. Natural Repellent

To create a natural essential oil spray, combine 20-30 drops of essential oil with 2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol (to emulsify the oils) and fill the rest of a 4oz glass bottle with distilled water. Shake well before each use to refresh rooms, fabrics, or linens naturally. Most used oils are Citronella and Peppermint.

Key Safety Note: Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying them to the skin to avoid irritation, and check for safety with children and pets.
