To use a traditional aromatherapy oil burner, fill the top bowl two-thirds full with water, add 3 to 10 drops of your choice of essential or fragrance oil, and light a standard tealight candle underneath to vaporize the scent.
Step-by-Step Setup
- Check and position: Inspect the burner for any structural cracks or chips. Place it firmly on a flat, heat-resistant surface away from loose fabrics, drafts, pets, and children.
- Add water: Fill the top reservoir dish roughly two-thirds full with water. Avoid filling it to the absolute brim to prevent splashing. Tip: Using warm or hot water allows the fragrance to disperse faster.
- Add the fragrance: Drop 3 to 10 drops of pure essential oil or formulated fragrance oil directly into the water. Do not use oil without water, as the direct heat will scorch the oil, produce smoke, and potentially crack the burner.
- Light the tealight: Slide an unscented tealight candle into the lower opening of the burner base and carefully light it.
Essential Safety Practices
- Monitor water levels: Never allow the top bowl to completely dry out while the candle is burning. Burning a dry dish creates toxic smoke and shatters ceramic or glass components.
- Time limits: Keep your burning sessions between 30 to 60 minutes at a time. This prevents the scent from becoming overly intense or irritating to your nasal passages.
- Do not move it hot: Wait for the wax or water to cool completely before touching or relocating the vessel.
- Never leave unattended: Treat a burning oil unit with the same fire-safety vigilance as an open flame candle
